Chapter 14
Next morning Steph got up a bit later than usual after what had turned out to be a good nightâs sleep once she had managed to get Rob out of her head and finally drop off. The good news was that thoughts of him had prevented her from obsessing about the upcoming biopsy. When she got up to the villa for breakfast on the terrace it was to find no sign of Ethan, whose bedroom door had been closed as she walked past. She had seen and heard nothing of him last night, and it was almost nine by now so she hoped he hadnât done anything stupid. She sat down opposite Keith and Faye and recounted how she had managed to drive Rob back safely and how he had given her dinner. Faye looked impressed but this was not, as it turned out, on account of her driving prowess.
âHe actually invited you into his house?â Steph saw her exchange looks with Keith. âBut he behaved himself, right?â
Steph was quick to reassure them. âHe was a perfect gentleman.â She could see incredulity on Keithâs face, but Faye looked remarkably satisfied.
âThatâs real progress. Maybe heâs changing after all. Well done.â
Steph could feel the eyes of both of them on her, but she was saved by the arrival of Cesare from the house.
âCiao, Stefania, you got back all right?â
She repeated what she had just told Robâs parents and saw a smile appear on his face. âVery good. Iâm glad you two are getting on. Now what can I bring you: your usual or something else? Iâve made a fresh fruit salad if you like.â
Steph thanked him and asked for a bowl of fruit salad and her usual cappuccino. As he went off, Faye made an observation. âOf course, itâs because youâre also musical and from what Keith says, you like playing classical music.â
âThatâs what I was brought up on, but I love all kinds of music.â
âThatâs it, then. Being with you makes him feel comfortable.â
Steph was glad if she made Rob feel comfortable, but she knew that for her it could so easily have become more than that. In fact being with him was stimulating rather than comforting. Of course, she thought to herself, this explained why the kiss she had been half expecting last night hadnât materialised. Although she might be harbouring romantic notions â however inadvisable â he saw their relationship in a different, altogether more prosaic light. Quite simply: she was his comfort blanket. Nice as it was to know that she was offering support to another human being, deep down inside she almost regretted the fact that he hadnât tried to seduce her. No sooner had this thought registered with her than she realised how ridiculous it was. This man was trouble, and she would do well to steer clear of him. Besides, she was only here for another week or two and then that would be that. Nothing much should or would come out of it anyway.
